You noclipped out of reality and into the yellow rooms. Backrooms drops you into the endless, humming corridors of the internet’s favorite horror setting: stained carpet, buzzing fluorescent lights and a layout that never quite repeats. Find the exit if you can, and try not to meet whatever else is walking the halls.
About Backrooms
The premise is simple and mean. You explore a maze of identical-looking rooms — offices, hallways, storage spaces — searching for the doors and keys that lead onward. There is no combat and no map worth trusting, which leaves stealth, memory and nerve as your only real tools. The deeper you go, the less the space behaves like somewhere physical.
What sells it is atmosphere rather than cheap startles: distant footsteps that may or may not be yours, lights that flicker at the wrong moment, and the growing certainty that something is tracking your route. It is a short-form horror experience built for the browser, ideal for playing with headphones and low expectations of comfort.
How to Play
Move with WASD or the arrow keys and look around with the mouse. Interact with doors, switches and key items using the designated action key when the prompt appears. There is no weapon — when something hostile shows up, your options are to hide, break line of sight or run for the next room. Keep track of landmarks yourself; the corridors are designed to look the same, so the room you passed through twice is information worth remembering. Find the keys, unlock the exits and keep moving onward, depending on the level’s goal.
Tips
- Listen before you open doors. Audio cues often announce a threat before you can see it.
- Backtrack deliberately along walls rather than cutting through the middle; the edges of a maze are easier to memorize.
- If you are lost, pick a wall and follow it. Random wandering stacks up disorientation fast.
