You, a tank and a base full of things that need exploding. Awesome Tanks 1 is a top-down shooter built around exactly two ideas: drive, and shoot everything that is not you. Levels are labyrinths of enemy soldiers, gun turrets and hidden rooms stuffed with cash and hardware.
About Awesome Tanks 1
You roll into each level with a basic tank and a simple objective — clear out the hostile forces and wipe the place clean. Between rooms you spend collected cash on bigger guns, thicker armor and speed upgrades, turning a fragile starter vehicle into a rolling apocalypse over the course of the campaign. Walls break, crates explode and secrets hide behind suspiciously breakable sections of the map.
The controls are immediate, which is the game’s best trick. There is no complex combo system, just driving and aiming, and the pleasure comes from reading a room, backing into cover and picking off turrets before they pick you off. It is the sort of game where one more level easily turns into five.
How to Play
Drive with the arrow keys or WASD, and aim with the mouse. Left click fires your current weapon; the tank’s turret tracks the cursor independently of the hull, so you can strafe and shoot in different directions. Blow up crates and barrels for cash and ammo, then spend at the upgrade screen between levels on weapons, armor, speed and reload. Doors open when a room is clear. Watch the minimap for red dots — turret fire from off-screen is the most common way to lose a good run.
Tips
- Shoot explosive barrels before you drive past them; the chain reactions clear rooms faster than your cannon.
- Upgrade armor early. A tank that survives two extra hits gives you time to learn new enemy patterns.
- Hug walls and corners — most turrets cannot track you through a doorway, making doorways your best weapon.
